Blackout Day

Have you visited Google, Wikipedia or Reddit today? If not, I suggest you do because today is Blackout Day. A day when some of the biggest and most important sites on the Internet have disabled their services in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act and the PROTECT IP Act currently creeping its way through our legislative systems.

What is SOPA? Well, here's the rundown from google:

1. SOPA and PIPA would censor the Web

The U.S. government could order the blocking of sites using methods similar to those employed by China. Among other things, search engines could be forced to delete entire websites from their search results. That’s why 41 human rights organizations and 110 prominent law professors have expressed grave concerns about the bills.

2. SOPA and PIPA would be job-killers because they would create a new era of uncertainty for American business

Law-abiding U.S. internet companies would have to monitor everything users link to or upload or face the risk of time-consuming litigation. That’s why AOL, EBay, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Mozilla, Twitter, Yahoo and Zynga wrote a letter to Congress saying these bills “pose a serious risk to our industry’s continued track record of innovation and job-creation.” It’s also why 55 of America’s most successful venture capitalists expressed concern that PIPA “would stifle investment in Internet services, throttle innovation, and hurt American competitiveness”. More than 204 entrepreneurs told Congress that PIPA and SOPA would “hurt economic growth and chill innovation”.

3. SOPA and PIPA wouldn’t stop piracy

To make matters worse, SOPA and PIPA won’t even work. The censorship regulations written into these bills won’t shut down pirate sites. These sites will just change their addresses and continue their criminal activities, while law-abiding companies will suffer high penalties for breaches they can’t possibly control.

There are effective ways to combat foreign “rogue” websites dedicated to copyright infringement and trademark counterfeiting, while preserving the innovation and dynamism that have made the Internet such an important driver of American economic growth and job creation. Congress should consider alternatives like the OPEN Act, which takes targeted and focused steps to cut off the money supply from foreign pirate sites without making US companies censor the Web.

Fancy Pancakes

My kids love pancakes. And I do too. But I got tired of making the round ones all the time. We used food coloring for a while to make them fun, but then I got a little more creative.

I bought cheap plastic ketchup and mustard bottles at Walmart, filled them with batter and took requests. I've made everything from Lightning McQueen to whales to helicopters to Peter Pan. It's fun, easy and the kid's LOVE them.

(Please excuse the horrible iPhone photos)

Walgreens & Express Script

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walgreens for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

You may have heard the news about Walgreens and Express Script parting ways already. Despite Walgreens efforts over the past year to negotiate a new contract with Express Script, they were unsuccessful in reaching an agreement. As a result, all Walgreens pharmacies and Duane Reade pharmacies are no longer in the Express Scripts’ pharmacy provider network. Which means that the Express Scripts’ customers are forced to change pharmacists, having to drive farther to get prescriptions filled and aren’t seeing lower costs at the checkout either.

But what about those that would rather stay with Walgreens despite the failed negotiation with Express Script? Well, thankfully, Walgreens is trying to help ease the burden. They are offering a special discount to the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club. Basically, a family would pay $10 for a yearly membership that covers the entire immediate family, including your spouse, all children under the age of 22 and your pets. In return, you receive special discount prices on all your prescriptions. That means big savings on more than 8,000 brand-name medications and on all generic medications. Plus, discounts on flu shots, pet prescriptions, nebulizers and diabetic supplies. And you get bonuses when you purchase Walgreens brand products and photofinishing services.

You can stay updated and fully informed by liking Walgreens on Facebook and following Walgreens on Twitter. (@Walgreens)

Shameless Premieres Sunday!

To refresh your memory before Season 2 of Shameless premieres on Sunday, at the end of Season 1, Steve was trying to convince Fiona to skip town with him to the beautiful and care-free Costa Rica. A pretty enticing offer, I’d say. Initially, she decided to go, but then changed her mind to stay with her family. A noble decision, but is it really the best one?  If I were in her shoes, I’d have a tough time making that choice too. On one hand, she’s still a kid and should be able to pick up and start her own life somewhere else. But on the other hand, since her father is worthless, her family really depends on her. So leaving wouldn’t just mean starting a new life, but potentially destroying that of her siblings. So, in the end, it was the right choice I think, but we’ll see how it pans out in Season 2.

Get caught up on all you missed with the DVD and Blu-Ray boxsets and watch the new Season premiering on Sunday, January 8th, at 9pm on Showtime.
I have been hired by Warner Bros. WBWord division to promote Shameless Season One on DVD.

New Years

Resolutions. Make 'em or not? I did. With all good intentions to be more positive and lose weight. And per my first resolution I'm optimistic that I'll do both.

I saw this and thought the typography was pretty fabulous. So, how 'bout it? What's your resolution?
